Seann William Scott / Sum 41

Well this week flew by, and here we are at the 2nd episode of the season. From my previous experiences of 2nd episodes, I honestly wasn't expecting much. In the past few years the 2nd episode of the season have been very poor. It was nice to have a musical guest that I'd actually listen to in my spare time though...

[ COLD OPENING ] George W. Bush

While I was expecting Bush to return soon, I didn't expect they'd bring him back this soon! I was pleasantly surprised. In retrospect, I think this was a fairly risky sketch, but easily one of the best pieces of Bush dialogue I've heard in a long time. This was a great way to start of the show!

RATING : 9.5/10

[ MONOLOGUE ] Seann William Scott

Well, he seems pretty enthusiastic to be hosting. The old clips they showed were pretty funny, especially the silent film clip, but the final clip was just dumb. A typical monologue I suppose.

RATING : 7/10

[ COMMERCIAL ] Law & Order : Parking Violations Unit

This is an incredibly good idea, but I found the commercial not as funny as it could have been. Tracy pretending to be handicapped was humorous, but that's about it.

RATING : 7/10

[ SKETCH ] Jeffrey's

Seann made it extremely obvious that he was reading the cue cards, so that didn't help the rating. Horatio's character was funny as usual, especially when he said that "the 80's are bizack!". Will's little jetpack escapade at the end was really funny. A decent sketch.

RATING : 7.5/10

[ SKETCH ] E! Joan Rivers on the Red Carpet

This was a very clever sketch, and it was very funny. Rachel's Calista Flockhart impression was great, and Ana as Joan Rivers was perfect. Her insults that she "wasn't making" were hilarious. I especially liked when her forehead started crying because "that's where her tear ducts are now". Classic!

RATING : 8/10

[ SKETCH ] Jarret's Room

I thought they'd have the sense to get rid of this sketch. The part where they went through the yearbook was amusing. Gobi is funny, but only in small doses. I don't know what the idea of the DJ was... This is the kind of sketch I'd expect to see at the very end of a show.

RATING : 5/10

[ MUSIC ] Sum 41

It's been awhile since SNL has had a band on that I actually voluntarily listen to, so I was looking forward to this. They were great and the song sounded good live.

[ WEEKEND UPDATE ] With Jimmy Fallon & Tina Fey

Well I can always count on the Weekend Update for some laughs. However, I was pretty disappointed by some of the jokes, but they got better towards the end. The Weekend Update Joke-Off was a great idea, but hopefully next time they do it they'll have some better jokes. The best part, of course, was the Landshark segment. "Dominos Pizza. Candygram." Great to see a classic SNL sketch getting reused. And Chevy signing off at the end for Tina was great.

RATING : 9.5/10

[ SKETCH ] Inappropriate Meeting Attire

As disgusting as this sketch was, I found it extremely humorous. I knew that they'd all crack up at one point in time, it's just that sorta sketch. These writers have crazy minds. I can safely say that I'd rather not see more sketches like this, even though I found it funny.

RATING : 8/10

[ SKETCH ] The How Do You Say, Ah Yes... Show

And I thought I'd seen the last of it... but no there's more. This sketch was just dumb and didn't have a point. I almost fell asleep.

RATING : 1/10

[ NOVEL ] My Big Thick Novel By Jack Handey

Well this is the last thing I expected to see. I'm a huge fan of the Handey Deep Thoughts, so maybe with some time, these will get really funny. I feel that tonight's was average, compared to ones that are soon to come.

RATING : 2.5/5*
* - not counted towards episode's final rating

[ MUSIC ] Sum 41

This is their second single "In Too Deep". This song rocked just like Fatlip! Great to see some good rock bands on SNL!

[ SKETCH ] The Approval Center

Umm...riiiiiiiiight.... This didn't make any sense whatsoever, but Kattan's testimonial was kinda funny,

RATING : 2.5/10

[ SKETCH ] Date with a Porn Star

Well the only thing good about this sketch was the fact that the Featured Players are getting some airtime. Again, a good idea, but not funny at all.

RATING : 1/10

   [ OVERALL RATING ] 60 / 100

   [ BEST SKETCH ] E! Joan Rivers on the Red Carpet ( 8 )

[ BEST QUOTE ] "If you had any brains, you would've challenged me to a game of Scrabble, or a beard-off. You might have won that because I don't have a beard." - Will Ferrell as George W. Bush, referring to Osama Bin Laden.

[ POINTS OF INTEREST ] George W. Bush is back! Ana Gasteyer has another new picture during the opening credits. Chevy Chase makes a cameo during Weekend Update's Landshark segment. Jack Handey is back with "My Big Thick Novel".

Although the show consisted of mostly average sketches, the last few really brought down the show's rating. The only segments of the show I'd enjoy watching again would be the Bush Opening, Weekend Update, and Sum 41's performances. I'm preparing myself now for an even worse show next week. I'd rather see Radiohead perform than Macy Gray, and we all know how much I "like" Radiohead... Maybe SNL will pull off a miracle and get some good sketches written, and maybe Drew will be a good host. Until next week...
