Concert Review -
On April 15th I went to the Sum 41 concert in my hometown. It was a phenomenal show! Read my full review here !
For the third episode in a row I had very high hopes. This would be Alec's tenth time hosting, so I was pretty sure they'd do something crazy during the monologue. I'm not a huge P.O.D. fan, but it's better than rap. I guess I'd have to wait and see what Alec and the crew had in store this time.
[ COLD OPENING ] FOX News
I found this to be a very odd sketch to be an opening, but what the hell, whatever fits. Overall, this was a great opening. This really shows how ridiculous FOX news really is, but still does it in good taste. The Geraldo bit was good, but not as good as his last few appearances on Weekend Update. This was a good way to start of the show.
RATING : 9/10
[ MONOLOGUE ] Alec Baldwin
I can't believe they found a way to get Darrell's Gore impression on the show again. Although his impression is always hilarious, I was pretty disappointed by this monologue, and maybe it was because my expectations were too high. There were some funny lines by Darrell, but nothing too spectacular. Disappointing.
RATING : 6/10
[ COMMERCIAL ] Kotex Classic
[ SKETCH ] Gay Voicemail
This is one of those classic SNL ideas that I love so much. No recurring characters, no catch phrases, just flat out spontaneous comedy. I nearly crapped my pants when the first recording played back. Hilarious.
RATING : 9.5/10
[ SKETCH ] Elderly Black Women
This was a clever idea and was pretty funny throughout. Jimmy's reactions and comments were hilarious. And honestly, there's nothing greater than Tracy dressed up as an elderly woman. Great!
RATING : 8/10
[ SKETCH ] Ozzy in the Recording Studio
Ozzy Osbourne is probably Horatio's best impression. "Could you sing your order please?" I don't get MTV where I live (All I get is MuchMusic), so I haven't had the pleasure of seeing the show. But from what I gather, this was pretty much dead on. Again, a very strong sketch.
RATING : 9/10
[ SKETCH ] The Cardinals
I had no idea where this was going until after the Pope said his little line. By that time I was in pain from laughing so hard. SNL has guts! Good sketch!
RATING : 8/10
[ WEEKEND UPDATE ] With Jimmy Fallon & Tina Fey
This was definitely one of the stronger updates of the season. I think the best joke was the Starr Jones one. "...I'm afraid she'll break through this wall like the Kool-Aid man and kick my ass". The little segment with Amy as Tina's daughter was pretty funny too. Above average, but it still doesn't compare to the select few from earlier this year.
RATING : 9.5/10
[ MUSIC ] P.O.D.
This is their song "Youth of the Nation", as you probably guessed because they sang that line 426 times in two and a half minutes.
[ SKETCH ] The Luvahs
This is another recurring sketch that's starting to grow on me. This one wasn't as good as some of the ones earlier in the year, but it had some good pronunciations "su-baru", "ho-ttub", among others. The part with the Asian man was completely unexpected and hilarious. Pretty good sketch for this late in the show!
RATING : 7/10
[ COMMERCIAL ] France
Best commercial of the season, hands down. This was one of the funniest things I've seen on SNL in a long time. It was a bit short though, so I didn't think a 10 was applicable, so a 9.5 will have to do. Regardless, after the dog feces comment I completely lost it and couldn't stop laughing until after the commercial break.
RATING : 9.5/10
[ SKETCH ] Tony Bennett Show
The first downfall to this show. Sure, Alec as Tony was pretty funny, and him burning that guy about being gay was classic, but it really didn't live up to the sketches beforehand. I was quite disappointed.
RATING : 6/10
[ CARTOON ] Anatominals
Okay I had a little patience for this idea when they aired one last year, but now it's just flat out disgusting and ridiculous. If I didn't know better I'd swear I was watching MadTV. The only thing funny was Lorne's cartoon character and how he kept smashing the television sets.
RATING : 4/10
[ MUSIC ] P.O.D.
Well this song is clearly much better than their first, and they sound very much the same live as they do on the radio. But still, the entire song is "I feel so alive, for the very first time, I can't deny you, and I think I can fly" over a hundred times. It just gets on your nerves.
[ NOVEL ] My Big Thick Novel By Jack Handey
"As the circus clown came towards me with the knife, I had to laugh, 'cause his outfit was pretty funny" This reminded me of the 'Deep Thought' when the clown killed the guy's father. Pretty funny!
RATING : 3/5*

[ OVERALL RATING ] 78 / 100
[ BEST SKETCH ] Gay Voicemail ( 9.5 )
[ BEST QUOTE ] "Oh! And that Asian man from the library!" - Will Ferrell in The Luvahs
[ POINTS OF INTEREST ] This was Alec's tenth time hosting SNL, and his second time in as many years.
Again, like last season's Alec Baldwin episode, it ends up with an abnormally high score. But it's very well deserved. This was definitely the best episode of the season. It's obvious that Alec has a knack for live television like this. Too bad this will be his last time working with this group of people (or at least it looks that way). Anyway, only two episodes left this season. Let's go out on some more high notes!
