Jonny Moseley / Outkast

Before I start, just like to give the Canadian Olympic hockey teams some praise after sweeping the golds in both Men's and Women's action.

After the month off for the Olympics, I've going through SNL withdrawal. I was really looking forward to this show. I didn't really know what to expect from Mr. Jonny Moseley, but they must have picked him for a reason, so I didn't figure he'd be too bad. Not a big Outkast fan, but whatcha gonna do?

[ COLD OPENING ] George W. Bush's "Axis of Evil"

Described in one word, this opening was hilarious. It was just great how he talked about all the people he was adding to his "axis of evil". The Evil Kinevil thing caught me off guard, but it was a great line. This was just so dumb it was funny. I enjoyed it immensely.

RATING : 9.5/10

[ MONOLOGUE ] Jonny Moseley

Jonny skiing down the little ramp in the monologue added a nice touch. Nothing out of the ordinary here, but nothing really stood out as being all that funny. Just an average monologue, but at least it didn't suck.

RATING : 5.5/10

[ SKETCH ] Sully and Denise

An interesting sketch idea I must admit. However, compared to some of the more recent Sully & Denise sketches, this one really came up short. Jonny's character was just an annoyance. There were a few funny points, but I'm a little leery that they started off the show with this. What's to come?

RATING : 6/10

[ SKETCH ] The O'Reilly Factor

Oh...my...god...the greatest sketch of the evening, hands down! I've never seen this actual show on TV, but Jeff's character was just so hilarious I didn't really have to see the real thing. I laughed through almost the entire sketch. "Well for my money, New York City's the capital!" Just so ridiculous it was funny. SNL seriously needs more of this sort of comedy. This was a friendly reminder of the Hardball sketches from last year, but I think this was better. I wasn't really convinced that Jeff deserved to be here, but after seeing this sketch, there's no doubt in my mind that a spot on this cast belongs to him. Soooo close to that big '10', but not quite. Great work!

RATING : 9.5/10

[ SKETCH ] DisMissed

Is this an actual show? I've never seen it... I didn't really find anything too funny about this sketch. Something about being hypoglycemic and having one leg just isn't all that funny. Maybe they should have realized this and placed this closer to the end.

RATING : 6.5/10

[ SKETCH ] Dinner Roll for Humanity

I found it pretty funny how lame it looked when he first started his dinner roll, but that was pretty much it for comedy in this sketch. This was more a glorification of the host than a comedy sketch. Poor.

RATING : 4/10

[ WEEKEND UPDATE ] With Jimmy Fallon & Tina Fey

Unfortunately, this Weekend Update was a little bit lackluster. There were a few good jokes, but nothing that really stood out. Chris Kattan's new "Hollywood" character was...err...interesting. Kind of funny in a way, but if this turns into a recurring character I can see it getting very old very fast.

RATING : 8.5/10

[ MUSIC ] Outkast

Rather than "groove to the catchy ditty" I decided to sit there and stare at the wall with my fingers in my ears.

[ SKETCH ] Super Buzzers

This sketch showed immediate promise, but sort of went downhill fast. The celebrity impressions really weren't that funny, except for Seth, who looked exactly like Richard Dawson, and Horatio's character, who was just extremely funny. This seemed quite drawn out and I can safely say I wasn't a big fan.

RATING : 5/10

[ SKETCH ] Typhoid Mary

This was just bad. Nothing funny at all. Maybe I didn't get it? Or was there nothing there to get....?

RATING : 1/10

[ NOVEL ] My Big Thick Novel By Jack Handey

"I tried to explain to Lelani..." I don't get it.

RATING : 0.5/5*

[ MUSIC ] Outkast

Oh good, I was hoping they'd come back out for another performance. Boy I sure am GIDDY right now!

[ SKETCH ] Extreme Wedding

Jeez, not much for comedy here either! This episode has gone WAY downhill since the start. Great to see Parnell again in yet another sketch, but it's too bad he didn't have anything funny to say. This was definitely just filler.

RATING : 2/10

[ NOVEL ] My Big Thick Novel By Jack Handey

"I tried to tell Meela about my planet...what is she, some kind of idiot?" Ahh back to the typical Handey humor! I liked this one, definitely one of the better "Thick Novels" of the year.

RATING : 4/5*

   [ OVERALL RATING ] 58 / 100

   [ BEST SKETCH ] The O'Reilly Factor ( 9.5 )

[ BEST QUOTE ] "How d'ya like them apples, France?" - Will Ferrell as George W. Bush

[ POINTS OF INTEREST ] We have a returnee cast member...Chris Parnell! Chris was in five sketches tonight. Don Pardo was missing, so Jimmy Fallon(?) did the voiceovers.

A few highpoints to this episode, but overall, I was extremely disappointed. But not to fear, I say...because one of the funniest people on the planet is hosting next week...Jon Stewart! I'm hoping that it will be one of the best shows of the season, even though Will's not going to be there, and I doubt Darrell will too. But Chris Parnell has returned to the cast, so it's not all bad!
