I was unsure what to expect. I was hoping that with the three weeks off the writers would be able to get some great material prepared for the first episode of 2001. Well, I guess I'd just have to wait and see.
[COLD OPENING] Dick Cheney Address
When I saw Darrell sitting there as Dick Cheney, I knew his impressions would be perfect. Was it ever! I loved how Bush came in with the dog he found, and how he and his cabinet members decided to name it "Awesome Dude". The part about Cheney's heart stopping was kinda dumb though...All around, a great way to start the show!
RATING : 8.5/10
[MONOLOGUE] Charlie Sheen
I think this was the funniest monologue of the season. I think it's great how they take Q & A from the writers pretending to be audience members, and it was hilarious when Tracy Morgan came out and bought the drugs. I think he's TRYING to ruin his public image!
RATING : 8/10
[COMMERCIAL] FOX Reality TV
This was the BEST commercial of the season so far! SNL finally took some shots at those ridiculous Survivor-wannabes, and what an outcome! Herpes Island, Temptation Trailer, and The Cannibal are great ways to mock FOX and reality television in general.
RATING : 9.5/10
[SKETCH] Iron Chef
This was just dumb. This should have been one of those "end of the show filler sketches", not the first sketch of the night. If THIS was the best the night had to offer, I hoped I'd be dead by the end...
RATING : 4/10
[SKETCH] Eric Dickerson's NFL Pre Game Special
Well, I guess I was wrong. They were just getting started. For those of you who watch Monday Night Football, you'd know that Morgan's impression of Eric Dickerson is perfect. You can't understand a WORD. Dan Fouts as a guest was great, but the Charlie Sheen bit was dumb. I loved how Dickerson talked about how the Texas Rangers signed Alex Rodriguez for "A Thousand Billion Dollars". Fallon's Dennis Miller was great, like always.
RATING : 8.5/10
[SKETCH] The Culps
I was thinking during the commercial break that they'd probably have a recurring character coming up next. I was seriously thinking that maybe the Culps, and I was right. You know, no matter how many times they do this sketch, it's still funny. "This is not a Limp Bisquick concert! I'm not Fred Dilst! No Marshing! This is not the place for a mush pit!" Great comedy, and my favorite part was how Will made fun of "Higher", by Creed (my favorite band). I can accept good comedy if it's in good taste. Great sketch!
RATING : 8.5/10
[WEEKEND UPDATE] With Tina Fey & Jimmy Fallon
Great, as always. It started off kind of slow, and Katherine Harris telling off the late-night hosts was just lame. However, they came up big with some great jokes back-to-back, and brought the rating up greatly! A great success.
RATING : 9.5/10
[MUSIC] Nelly Furtado
I watched for something to do, but it wasn't that great...
[MUSIC] Patsy Marsh
You can tell that this is going to be the next "Molly Shannon shoot me in the face" character. The only funny part about this sketch was the ending....classic comedy.
RATING : 2.5/10
[SKETCH] Birth of a 37-year old man
Uhh...this one just didn't make any sense, and it's not even the end of the show, but Will was funny as the infant.
RATING : 3/10
[SKETCH] T.G.I. Friday's
Now, THIS is twisted humor! I thought Kattan's character was almost exactly the same as his character when he first joined the cast, and nobody could understand what he was talking about. I liked how he mocked Molly and Charlie when they tried to order. But, the best (and the weirdest) part was when Will came out as "Thagnelius Garfield Ignatius Friday", the owner. He's a "Railroad Tycoooon"! Nice ending.
RATING : 6.5/10
[SHORT] The Pervert
I just noticed that Adam McKay is SNL's version of Tom Green. This was just stupid.
RATING : 1/10
[MUSIC] Classic Vaudeville
Ahh, the typical end of the show sketch. This got annoying after a while.
RATING : 1.5/10
Sketch of the night : Eric Dickerson's NFL Pre Game Special
Quote of the night : Chris Parnell as TV Announcer "Five lucky men. Ten available women. And one of them has a venereal disease! Find out which one on....HERPES ISLAND!"
OVERALL EPISODE RATING : 59/100
Once again, the average is lower than I expected. The show started out great, but what brought the rating down was all the short, pointless sketches at the end. You're better off with commercials than with short sketches. I'm looking forward to another live show, but I'm expecting it to bomb big time. I bet it's going to be another one of those "look I'm a female host so instead of doing comedy I'll just remove half of my clothing" shows....I guess we'll just have to see.
