I didn't expect much, seeing how we had another gangster rap artist and a giggling host. I expected Weekend Update to be great because of Al Gore's recent dropout of the presidential race. I also had my fingers crossed for one thing, a Celebrity Jeopardy...
[COLD OPENING] George W. Bush and Al Gore at Chi-Chi's
Just a typical SNL cold opening, both presidential candidates doing something stupid, but this was funny though. I loved how Bush said he'd cry like a baby if he lost, and would tell everybody to 'suck it'. This sounds exactly like him too! A great way to start off the show.
RATING : 8/10
[MONOLOGUE] Lucy Liu
This was one of the better monologues of the season so far. I loved the video of all the Asian woman stereotyping that goes on, and it was great to see her poke fun at herself. A bit bubbly, but I guess we'll see as the show goes on.
RATING : 7.5/10
[COMMERCIAL] Priceline.com
This wasn't that great. Darrell's impression was, as always, dead on. But it was the dialogue that wasn't very funny. The only part that I laughed at (and the audience did too) was when he said that the public doesn't want to spend forty minutes online to save 9 cents on a can of peas. It's true, Priceline.com didn't have that great a plan...
RATING : 4.5/10
[SKETCH] MTV TRL : Gemini's Twin
I wasn't crazy for the first Gemini's Twin sketch, and this one wasn't that great either. There didn't seem to be any sort of punch line, but the joke was just how they talked. Kinda dumb to bring them back on the show, but Lucy Liu was good as "Banaka".
RATING : 6/10
[SKETCH] Celebrity Jeopardy
OH THANK YOU JESUS!! In my opinion, this was the funniest Celebrity Jeopardy yet! Hammond as Sean Connery was a must, and Jimmy Fallon's Robin Williams impression was awesome! Will Ferrell isn't a very good Trebek, but it doesn't matter because he's hilarious anyway. Lucy Liu as Catherine Zeta-Jones was pretty lame and unfunny, but that's what usually happens. Anyway, BEST sketch of the season so far, keep it up!!
RATING : 10/10
[SKETCH] Pretty Living
Shoot me. Shoot me now.
RATING : 0/10
[SKETCH] Jarret's Room
This was, err, okay I guess. Nothing really all that funny, except when Chris Parnell came on camera with his "beard", haha. Also Jimmy shouting out to "Jaorg" was pretty great too. Other than that, this wasn't great, and they shouldn't bring this back as a recurring sketch.
RATING : 3/10
[WEEKEND UPDATE] With Tina Fey & Jimmy Fallon
I was disappointed after the first minute or so, because the jokes were not what I expected. They were still GOOD, don't get me wrong, but not excellent like they usually are. However, Jimmy Fallon doing his Christmas tunes was hilarious, so that brought my rating up a lot higher than it would have been. Now, Jimmy sang David Gray (from Tom Green episode) and U2 (from Val Kilmer episode), but he also sang Creed. Does that mean that they will be performing in the future? God, I hope so!!
RATING : 9/10
[MUSIC] Jay-Z
I hate rap.
[SKETCH] Christmas Ornaments
This wasn't funny at all, why didn't it get cut from dress rehearsal?
RATING : 1/10
[SKETCH] Robert Goulet with Jay-Z
I really thought that the first Robert Goulet sketch was funny. However, him sitting in a car with three stoned gangsters just doesn't appeal to me. Christ, they were all out of it just like that Radiohead guy...And Jay-Z cursing in the background probably didn't make Lorne too happy, don't expect him to be on the show in the near future.
RATING : 3/10
[COMMERCIAL] Season's Greetings from Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey
LOL this was actually pretty funny because it catches you off guard.
RATING : 6/10
[MUSIC] Jay-Z
I hate rap with a burning passion and I would rather have my head beaten in a car door several times.
[SKETCH] Season's Greetings from Saturday Night Live
I know they did the exact same thing in the Val Kilmer episode, but I couldn't resist to laugh again. This is just too funny, but I don't know why...
RATING : 7/10
Sketch of the night : Celebrity Jeopardy
Quote of the night : Darrell Hammond as Sean Connery "I pose a conundrum to you, a riddle if you will." Will Ferrell as Alex Trebek "I DON'T want to hear it..." Darrell Hammond as Sean Connery "What's the difference between you and a mallard with a cold? One's a sick duck...I can't remember how it ends but your mother's a whore."
OVERALL EPISODE RATING : 54/100
That average turned out lower than I expected...either way, SNL needs to get better hosts, better musical guests, and keep the great sketches like The Culps and Celebrity Jeopardy, and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD KILL MOLLY SHANNON! It's Christmas break, maybe after the writers eat ten times their weight in turkey (excluding Hugh Fink, hehe), they'll get some ideas for good sketches.
